5 Signs You’re Growing Spiritually (Even When It Doesn’t Feel Like It)

5 Signs You’re Growing Spiritually (Even When It Doesn’t Feel Like It)

Have you ever gone through a season where you feel completely spiritually stuck? You’re reading your Bible, showing up to church, trying to pray — but nothing feels like it’s changing. No breakthroughs. No mountaintop moments. Just ordinary, quiet days that leave you wondering: am I even growing at all?

Here’s the truth: spiritual growth is often invisible from the inside. Some of the most significant transformation in your faith happens in the seasons that feel the most dry. And there are real, biblical signs that you’re growing — even when you can’t feel it.

Here are five of them.

1. You’re Less Satisfied With Superficial Things

One of the clearest early signs of spiritual growth is a shift in what satisfies you. Things that used to fill you up — scrolling, entertainment, the approval of others — start to feel empty. You find yourself craving something deeper, something real.

This is actually a gift. Colossians 3:2 says:

“Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.”

When the world starts to feel less satisfying, it’s often because God is expanding your capacity for something greater. Matthew 5:6 promises:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

The hunger itself is a sign of life. Don’t ignore it — lean into it.

2. You Have a Greater Desire for God’s Word

When you find yourself genuinely wanting to open your Bible — not out of obligation, but out of actual longing — that’s spiritual growth. It may be subtle. Maybe you notice yourself thinking about a verse during the day, or feeling unsettled when you’ve gone too long without reading. That hunger for Scripture is a sure sign the Holy Spirit is working in you.

Psalm 119:105 says:

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

And Jeremiah 15:16 captures it beautifully:

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart.”

When God’s Word starts to feel like nourishment rather than a task, you’re growing.

3. You Show More Love and Patience Toward Others

This one is easy to miss because it happens so gradually. But look around at your relationships. Are you a little more patient with your kids than you used to be? A little quicker to extend grace to a friend who let you down? A little less reactive when things don’t go your way?

These quiet character shifts are the fruit of spiritual growth. Galatians 5:22–23 tells us:

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Fruit doesn’t grow overnight. It develops slowly, steadily, through seasons of being rooted in Christ. If you’re noticing even small changes in how you love the people around you, that’s the Holy Spirit at work.

4. You Repent More Quickly

Here’s a sign that surprises many women: a tender, responsive heart toward God is actually evidence of growth, not failure. When you mess up and your first instinct is to run toward God rather than away from Him — that’s spiritual maturity.

A hardened heart makes excuses. A growing heart is quick to acknowledge wrong and return to God. Psalm 51:10 is the prayer of a growing heart:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

If you find yourself quicker to repent than you were a year ago, don’t overlook that. It’s one of the most beautiful signs of growth there is.

5. You Crave Authenticity Over Performance

Early in our faith, many of us are still performing — trying to look spiritual, say the right things, be seen as a “good Christian.” But as we mature, that performance starts to feel hollow. We stop caring about impressing others with our faith and start caring deeply about the realness of it.

You want a genuine connection with God, not just the appearance of one. You’re willing to admit struggle, doubt, and weakness — because you know that’s exactly where God meets you. John 4:24 says:

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Craving that kind of authentic, unperformed faith? That’s growth.

We Walk by Faith, Not by Feeling

If you’ve seen even one or two of these signs in your life, be encouraged — you are growing. Spiritual growth is rarely dramatic. It’s quiet, steady, and often only visible in hindsight. In this kingdom, we don’t walk by feeling. We walk by faith.

Keep reading the Word. Keep praying. Keep showing up — even on the dry days. The growth is happening, whether you can feel it or not.
